Songs
Keep a setup for each song you play, and load it before you play it: the song (the patterns, the sounds, the effects and the settings, everything SAVE keeps) and up to four kits of your own samples. The same way fm1buddy does it without a computer.
The FM-1
Connect it to this computer with a USB data cable, and use Chrome or Edge.
Setups
A setup is a folder: fomajam.bin (the song), and its kits, as .wav files in kits/ or as they were saved (fomajam-kits.bin). fm1buddy keeps them on its SD card the same way (/setups): choose that folder on the card, or any folder. Export writes a setup's patterns as MIDI files (midi/, for a DAW or another sequencer) and its kits as .wav files (kits/, for other samplers, or to change them).
Save keeps its song and kits as a new setup in the folder (or as files, when no folder is chosen).
Or a song's file:
Kits
A kit is a folder of .wav files, and its name is the machine's name (after MIDI on the MACHINE knob). Name the files after drum voices (bd.wav, sd.wav, ch.wav, oh.wav, cp.wav ...) and it is a drum kit, played as the others; otherwise each file is a key. Up to four kits, 288 KiB in all (about 25 seconds).
Install on the FM-1
Connect the FM-1 directly to this computer with a USB data cable, close other apps that use MIDI, and use Chrome or Edge. Do not unplug it while writing. Installing firmware is at your own risk.
This project
No package built yet.
Or the Bluetooth MIDI version (FM-1 only): a phone or computer connects to it over Bluetooth, for MIDI and clock. It leaves out the ACE drum machine to make room; your own kits still load. It can also connect to a Bluetooth MIDI device itself, such as another FM-1 (GLOBAL page, BT).
Another firmware file
Any FM-1 or M-Vave SMK-37 package (.fwsc) from this family: Felucca, SLOOP, Dinghy, X0X, ...
What is on the FM-1?

Rescue
It crashes, or does not start
- Switch the FM-1 off. Hold OCT- and switch it on. The screen says USB RESCUE: no sound, only the updater.
- Install a firmware that works from the Install tab, or the official one below.
A firmware built here that crashes twice while starting goes to the USB rescue by itself. A crash shows a red screen with the address it happened at (look it up in build/fm1/firmware.dis), then the FM-1 restarts.
An install was cut off
The FM-1 stays in update mode until an install finishes (its screen is dark or says UPDATE). Plug it in and finish the install:
Back to the official firmware
- Download M-VAVE's FM-1 V15: FM-1.fwsc (or from m-vave.com/download).
- Choose it here (it is checked before anything is written):
- Connect the FM-1, normally or in the USB rescue, and press the button.
Nothing reaches it
When even the USB rescue does not start, the chip's own boot ROM still can update it, but a browser cannot talk to it (it shows up as a USB disk, which browsers may not touch). From a computer:
- fm1_rescue.sh (macOS): puts the official firmware back through the boot ROM.
- FM-1-transporter: the protocol and tools behind it.
